Augmented-reality video games, HDTV, VR goggles—these days, everything seems to be about immersing yourself in a 3D world that's smack in your face. Two cafés in Seoul, though, are taking customers a step back and immersing them in two dimensions.

YND 223-14 and YND 223-14 (they're named after their addresses) were created by founder and owner Eun-Jin Lee. Everything in these cafés—from the walls and floors to the furniture and even the mugs—is designed to make you feel like you've stepped into an old-school, black-and-white line drawing, like something out of the New Yorker.

Walk into this cafe that feels like you stepped into a cartoon.

From virtually any angle, it feels like you're looking at a picture, even though you're actually in it. Illustrated curtains, plants, and other decoration add to the optical illusion. Truthfully, photos of the restaurants can be kind of difficult to wrap your head around—you need to see real humans sitting at the tables to even understand the concept and appreciate the illusion!

As in the original Mary Poppins movie when the characters jump into a chalk drawing on the sidewalk, everything around you looks and feels like a cartoon, like you're the only real person in it. And just like in the movie, that's exactly what makes it so magical.
